Many folks think of Easter as a holiday season from work and time spent with the family. For children it’s a season for chocolate! For churches it is an opportunity for reflection. It’s a bitter sweet occasion to consider- but whatever is it all about?
Mark 16v 2-7:
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
Let’s start with what we call “Good Friday.” A day of suffering and pain on a rough wooden cross for Jesus. Yet a good day for those who trust in the finished work of that cross as Christ took on Him the weight and shame of sin that believers may inherit eternal life.
Our passage though speaks of The Lords Day- that is the first day of the week. Why? What happened? Well, his followers went to the garden tomb only to find a very great stone rolled away! Inside they found an angel who knew they were there seeking Jesus.
Question: Are you seeking Jesus in your life? It is the most important quest you can ever undertake. The prize is The Lord Himself!
Jesus was no longer in that tomb! He had risen from the dead. His resurrection brings power for all who trust Him to newness of life. Great obstacles are removed and burdens lifted by the power of God! Enjoy your break and your family if you have one. You can even enjoy a little bit of chocolate if you like.
Above all please do not forget why Christianity celebrates this season. It is a celebration of life and victory that can only be found in Christ. That is the very best of news and well worth sharing with others.
Blessings and much love at this special time from Pastor John and all @GCF.
