When you look at pictures of the birth of Christ it looks ever so peaceful. Clear bright sky’s, angels singing, a radiant expectant mother with a dutiful happy husband-to-be Joseph leading them on.
The truth is it was a time a great difficulty. Luke 2 v 1- 7:
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn
The Jewish nation had been conquered and was under the rule of the Romans.
There were rules about travel in place. There was a tax people felt was unfair that left many stretched.
The Jewish King Herod was no better than the Caesar they would be free from.
He would ultimately kill many innocent babies shortly afterwards.
It seemed ever such an unlikely time for The Messiah to come, and when He did He looked little and unimpressive to the majority who saw Him. He was largely unnoticed and unwanted.
Many of these same issues we see this year don’t we? Travel laws, financial pressure, political upheaval , worried parents and little time for Jesus for those who even consider Him.
But I want to think on this thought just a few verses later (10&11):
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord
Our Christmas message for 2020 is “Fear not”. Why you may ask?
“I bring you good tidings of great joy”
Who does it apply to, you may continue?
“to all people”
What is this tremendous news? - A saviour has come, some 2000 years ago.
His name is Jesus Christ and He is Lord even in the darkest of days. Christ can light up your life and bring comfort, cheer and peace.
You can touch Him today by faith and receive mercy from those nail pierced hands.
Wishing you all a very special Christmas.
Much love from all @GCF
