Learning to Trust

Updated: Nov 4, 2019

Question: Who can you really trust in your life? It’s a thought isn’t it?

Have you ever really trusted someone, only to be really let down and hurt?

As we travel along life's journey, there are certain people we know are not at all trustworthy: criminals, scoundrels and those we view as unsavoury characters.

Yet there are others we should be able to trust:

Family: Unfortunately, when working with people in addiction, all too often we meet those whom some family member has let down badly, or lied to: perhaps over a financial issue or just another broken promise.

Worse still some families are devastated by abuse of different sorts - mental, physical or sadly even sexual.

The trust bond is broken and real and lasting damage ensues.

Friendship: This is another area where we can be wounded, if we feel disloyalty has occurred.

Perhaps sharing a confidence, only to find out it has been gossiped about with others. Loaned something to help out a friend, but being unpleasantly surprised when it was neither appreciated nor repaid.

That cuts deep and is a bitter pill to swallow.

Relationship: Perhaps a marriage or a courtship which seems to start so well. You allow that person to share all areas of your life, believing it will be for life, only to find great disappointment and dissatisfaction, betrayal and hurt.

How will you ever learn to trust again?

Still today I have the very best of news for you if you find yourself in such a dilemma.

There is One we can trust who invites us into His family, is a friend who sticks closer than a brother and wants intimacy of relationship with us.

Psalm 16v1. “Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.”

We can trust The Lord knowing He will never leave us and never fail us. Always love those who put their trust in Him - even when we get it wrong as we all do.

Psalm 20v7 “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God”.

Never trust in your own strength or even the ability of others round about you first and foremost. Trust Christ today, trust Him with your life, trust Him in your death. Trust Him with your soul. You can trust Him in every way.

The words of this old hymn by Louisa M R Stead penned in 1882 say it so well:

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus

Just to take Him at His Word;

Just to rest upon His promise,

And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

Oh, how sweet to trust in Jesus,

Just to trust His cleansing blood;

And in simple faith to plunge me

’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,

Just from sin and self to cease;

Just from Jesus simply taking

Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,

Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;

And I know that Thou art with me,

Wilt be with me to the end.

Till next month, God bless
