It was with great sadness last month we saw the passing away of Queen Elizabeth 2nd. She was loved and respected by many. Her memorial service showed a high degree of goodwill even by those who would naturally hold different allegiances and standards.
Much thought went into how things we conducted and what was said. We now have a new King (Charles 3rd). Our thoughts and prayers are with him and we truly say “God save the King”.
It caused me however to consider the crucifixion of Jesus. Mark 15:25-27:
And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
He was called King at various points of that day- though never treated like one. Pilate asked if he was a king. The soldiers hailed him as a king as they beat and mocked Him. Above His cross was the inscription written ‘He was a King’. The Jewish leaders said “If you are a king come down from the cross”. Tragically none of it was genuine. For Christ was treated like the lowest of criminals.
Yet our story ends with one unlikely candidate recognising Him as King. It was the dying thief who said “Lord remember me when thou comest into thy Kingdom”.
Others failed to see Jesus as Lord, as a King with a kingdom they also wanted to enter. The thief had found a new king! But what do you make of this Jesus? Who is He to you and how will you act towards Him?
Some of this world’s monarchs are best forgotten, while others curry our respect and favour. For all that even the very best of them serve but for a time and none will rule or reign their lands or sit on their earthly thrones again.
The Lord Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the soon and coming King. Pay homage dear friend and receive Him by faith and like the dying thief you too will be in Paradise with Him.
Much love and blessings from all @GCF
